NZ names Voyager to Media Awards as Canon steps back

New Zealand's Newspaper Publishers' Association has named ISP Voyager as the new naming sponsor of its annual Media Awards following Canon's decision to step down.

Voyager Internet's chief executive Seeby Woodhouse says the media awards are a "natural fit" for his company, which is helping "make news accessible in real-time, anywhere at any time".

Awards director Jane Phare says Canon New Zealand - which had been naming sponsor for the last seven years, taking over from Qantas - will become a supporting sponsor for the photographic and videography categories.

Phare says the NPA, which runs the awards, would like to acknowledge the tremendous contribution Canon has made, both as a naming sponsor, as a previous supporting sponsor and as an ongoing sponsor. "Without Canon, and other supporting sponsors, the media awards would not exist and the excellent journalism achieved in New Zealand would go largely unacknowledged," she said.

The 2018 awards will continue to promote excellence in journalism in a rapidly changing media landscape, with several new award categories to be announced.

Now in its 45th year, the awards span newspapers, magazines and websites/digital including radio and TV. Entries will open later this month and close mid-February, with presentations at a gala dinner on May 11 at Cordis, Auckland (formerly The Langham).
